At AltaMed, we believe that your ZIP code should not be the primary determinant of your health. As we rebuild, we need to reinforce the strengths of our communities, giving all families access to affordable care with quality physicians and facilities.

Social Determinants of Health

Our health is nurtured by the foods we eat, the air we breathe, and our environment—from neighborhoods and parks to workplaces and schools. Scientists have determined that these and other non-clinical factors known as social determinants of health—have a great influence on our well-being.

We cannot begin to address a patient’s health without first acknowledging the environments in which they live.

The work we do in our clinics is just the tip of the iceberg. AltaMed must champion a thoroughly comprehensive approach to achieve meaningful and lasting impact in people’s lives.

What We Are Doing

The world needs nurses now more than ever. Providing a transformational education to future nurses via the AltaMed Nursing School Collaborative, in partnership with the University of La Verne and the Annenberg School of Nursing, is creating ladders of opportunity for future nurses.

BETTER ACCESS
TO CARE

Providing electronic devices to patients will allow them to communicate with care coordinators and schedule medical appointments for family members.

NEW STANDARDS IN
CULTURAL COMPETENCE

Expanded recruitment and training of culturally competent medical providers who understand and can communicate with patients, will lead to more consistent and effective care.

ENCOURAGING PATIENTS
TO VOTE AND ADVOCATE

Encouraging patients to vote and become civically active will influence the selection and priorities of elected representatives.
